President Dick Towle opened the meeting promptly at 7:00 p.m. with a slide show of what is going on in Gold Country.

The main program for the evening was a presentation of "Data Keeper" and "Lost & Found", both by PowerQuest. A copy of each was given to the lucky holders of the winning tickets.

"Data Keeper" is a program that automatically backs up your work in the background. It is doing this continuously and monitoring. It is an easy to use Window Interface. It does flexible backup profiles. File compression and versioning. Multiple storage options are available. It does Disk spanning. Filters Individual File Backups. Does a File Restore, plus many other things.

"Lost and Found" recovers deleted files. It recovers Data after reformatting. Also, recovers Data on damaged disks. It recovers Files when the FAT is destroyed, and much more.

We gained two new members who are interested in learning more about computers. It was pointed out to them that when our meeting opens at 7:00 p.m., that is the time for "beginners" to make their wishes known. It was discovered that rather than have a formal class starting from scratch, did not cover the basics as well as answering question as they were asked.

Dick pointed out that you should always make a copy of your original disks before installing them onto your computer. The reason being that many times something is written on the disk that makes it only capable of working with the computer you are working on. Many of the members have multiple computers for testing purposes and you don't need to buy separate copies when using on your own system.

Questions and Answers were varied and many points are brought out in general discussion.

Ken brought up the clubs Web Page and discussed the merits of IE-5 and Netscape. Ken does wonder why Netscape changes colors instead of using the same colors that IE uses, which are the HTML 4.0 standard. No one seemed to know the answer.

Dick asked if the group was interested in an HTML Presentation using FrontPage 2000. Oddly enough no one except Ken (the clubs webmaster) was interested. Odd because you would think that each person would like to be able to create a web-page for themselves or other organizations they may be affiliated with.

Many members in the audience were interested in the way "SmartPlanet" on the internet works at finding information to your querries, as well as the Ziff-Davis site.

Refreshments were served and everyone, as usual had the chance to take something home in the way of a program. The members are starting to bring in their "surplus" hardware and software, which is great for the newcomers who may not have very much of anything. A hardrive, a hand scanner, lots of current issues of magazines, etc. Of course the main prize of the evening were the two demonstrated programs by PowerQuest.

Remember! The Gold Country Users Group meet at the Placer Country Library in Auburn at 350 Nevada Street, in the Beecher Room at 7:00 p.m. on the second Wednesday of the month... next meeting is March 8, 2000. And our web site is www.foothill.net/gcpcug/welcome.html/ (Don't forget the welcome.html or it won't work.)
