January Meeting
The Davis Chapter DID meet in January. We actually had a pretty good turnout, and nobody had any bad Y2K experiences to report. But the deadline for submitting our monthly report fell before our meeting, so there was no January report.
February Meeting
We also had a nice turnout for our February meeting: 15 people showed up. Ralph Reid brought his laptop and modem so that we could plug into the Web again. Doing that at our January meeting had made it much more interesting.
This time, however, the U.S. government got in the way of our access to the Web (indirectly). We thought we were scheduled to meet in the large meeting room at the public library, but it was being used to instruct workers for the census. Despite our good turnout, they outnumbered us, so we moved to the smaller meeting room. Because the phone outlets in that room weren't working we couldn't access the Web!
Since we had brought along a VERY long telephone cord, we tried several other outlets in other parts of the library, but without luck. Next month's meeting should be in the usual large meeting room, so we expect to have a live connection again.
Despite the crowded room and the lack of a Web hookup, everybody seemed to enjoy the meeting. Dave Eden led the discussion, and just about everybody had something to contribute. We hope that you join us for our future meetings.
Other Business
In the meantime, "check out the State Controller's Office official Web site," says Ralph Reid. It has a section on "Unclaimed Property" that is worth checking. It's nothing too dramatic to look at, but it could yield a pleasant surprise: If you use it to search for your name, you might find that the state is holding unclaimed money or property that belongs to you due to settlement of a class action lawsuit! There are also several other reasons that money might be waiting for you to claim; see the FAQ list on the Web site.
Ralph has recovered several claims that he was entitled to. He advised us to try several variations of the spelling of your name when using the SEARCH button on the site; for example, try several spellings and abbreviations of your first name. Good luck, and if you recover some money, buy some donuts and bring them down to share with us at our March meeting!
Our next meeting will be held on the fourth Wednesday of March 2000,at 7:00 p.m. in the large meeting room in the Davis branch of the Yolo County Public Library.
