Roseville Chapter

Mark Nortrup, Service Manager at Computer Renaissance, returned to our February meeting to talk about monitor, scanner and printer resolution. His presentation went a long way to clear up the mysteries of how resolution, pixels and DPI (dots per inch) affect the quality of printer and monitor output. Mark also described the need for adjusting image resolution and file compression for efficient display on the Internet. We saw several examples where changes in DPI, compression and pixel settings made significant differences in printer output, but would have much less effect on an Internet display.

Monitor specifications were discussed to explain what "dot pitch" means to sharper images. Dot pitch, the spacing of triads of color receptors (RGB), has been reduced over the years from over .32mm down to .20mm -.28mm. The resulting increase of receptors within each pixel (picture element) makes text and other images much clearer.

For the March meeting, we will have a discussion of some of the many uses of various models of the Palm Pilot by our Vice President Guy Manwaring. This very useful device is not just an organizer and note pad. Guy will demonstrate many of the standard and add-on features and how to select the proper device for a user.

Elections are coming up April 6 for the Roseville Chapter. Nominations will be taken at the Thursday Mar 3 meeting through the April 6 meeting which is our night to introduce candidates, vote, and tabulate the results. We definitely need your attendance on April 6th.

Do not assume that there will be enough nominations for the offices of Secretary/Treasurer, Vice President, and President. If you want to nominate someone, or if you want to nominate yourself, please come to the next two meetings and let your nominations be known. And you can send nominations by email to Bob Kromrey.

If you want to initiate changes in our meetings, help build our membership, plan and set up interesting meeting presentations, please do not hesitate to become involved. If you can see way to improve attendance and interest in the group, please participate.

Within our small group, the vice president has the interesting position of being the main person to select our monthly presentations. The secretary/treasurer emails meeting announcements, writes meeting summaries, as well as keeping financial records of our huge financial dealings. The president presides over the monthly meetings and steering committee meetings, keeps the group unified , and is the liaison with the parent Sacramento Users Group.

We need your attendance and involvement at our meetings. We will let you know by email during March as we get nominations for the three offices.

You better show up, or you might be nominated and elected to an office that you don't want!
