President Dick Towle opened the meeting promptly at 7 p.m. by greeting everyone, especially the new members and guests. A brief report was given on what transpired at the General Meeting in Sacramento. Oh, how we all wished everyone could have seen the wizardry of a "baby grand piano," and how the computer made child's play out of creating, composing and playing a piano-plus all the other instruments that could be emulated. Of course it helped when the presenter was an accomplished pianist in his own right.
Dick then discussed Partition Magic 5.0 and doing a multiple boot from a second hard drive. He noted that the very last page of the Partition Magic 5.0 manual had three lines which mentioned this capability, and those lines said that the info was available only through the online help available in Boot Magic.
Ah, and so it was! It was there, and it requires "hiding" all of the hidden partitions that are on the C drive, and then making the first partition of the second drive active-and, of course, having the Boot operating system installed on that drive. If all the procedures are followed, then the added choice will show up in the Boot Magic Choice screen as the system is starting.
For those interested in hiding a new system, whether it is Linux or Windows 2000, this will keep the new system a bit more isolated from the Win 95 or Win98 choices, which typically have been installed on the C drive.
We also discussed Z-Tree. Zedtek,Inc. has a later version of Z-Tree on its Web site, and unclear references to a new release V1.47, to replace V1.41, which has been around quite a while. The version that comes up is V1.46t2, and references are made to a printed manual coming "soon." This is a reworked version of X-Tree, and can be downloaded free, but is a good buy at $30. The Web site is www.ztree.com.
One of our newer members also wanted to know something about "cookies," so we held a discussion on their pros and cons, what to do about them and how to clear them out of your cache, etc.
Jim Carman also told members about ZDnet's Software Express. You can subscribe to it by sending an email to on-express@zdemail.zdlist.com. It will send you a daily email of lists and links of different interesting things. They are all good files and are checked for viruses. For a list and description of all its software, you can go directly to http://www.analogx.com.
After more discussion, we had an election of officers for the coming year. The new officers are the present officers: President, Dick Towle; Secretary, Ken Weger; and Treasurer, Greg Dolkas. Of course, all do double duty serving in some capacity as membership coordinator, Web master, librarian, equipment set-up, prize finder, refreshment chair, etc.
Our main program of the evening was a demonstration on how to make your own Web page simple and easily using Netscape as an HTML editor. Greg showed us his Web Page was on "Kids Music", where he showed how a group of very talented youngsters on piano and organ play to groups around the country. He created the page using wave and midi files of various pieces of music for easy listening. He also added JPEG photos of the various musicians in JPEG for quick downloading and a few graphics in GIF files.
Greg used Netscape's text editor and various wizards functions to do the page. (Microsoft Word does this also). After creating the page, Greg used a shareware program, WS_FTP, to transfer his page to the Web Browser of choice. In this case his own ISP provides some space for a Web page.
The Web Page was quite easy to create. However, Ken (who does all of his in HTML) did state that if you understand HTML, it is easy to fine-tune your Web page and make some interesting adjustments to how it will ultimately look on the Web.
It is hoped that with this presentation that others in our group will be encouraged to try their own hand at creating their own Web Page. Brag a little. Show your accomplishments, in your hobbies, and other endeavors. Talk about your pets, etc. Special thanks to Retired Col. Warren Drack who secures the projector and sets it up each month for our group.
After the presentation, came the drawings for prizes of value. Everyone went home with something of value.
Remember, our usual meeting on the second Wednesday of the month will be on the fourth Wednesday of APRIL, because of a conflict with the meeting room at the library. April 26, 2000 is the date to remember for APRIL. 7:00 pm at the Placer County Library at 350 Nevada Street, Auburn.
Visit our Web page for more information about the group.
