The Sacramento Microsoft Database SIG cordially invites you to attend its kickoff meeting on June 22 at the Sacramento Association of Realtors Hall, 2003 Howe Avenue, Sacramento, CA from 6:30 to 9:30 pm. We'll describe our strategic direction for the new group and outline some future meeting topics.

The feature presentation will be Web-enabling Microsoft databases. We'll resent an overview of the issues faced by an organization beginning to build a database-driven Web site. We'll cover criteria for choosing an appropriate back-end database, selecting the front-end access tools, and determining whether a "middle-tier" is required, and we'll talk a little about Microsoft design tools and development environments.

Three speakers will explore different aspects of the problem and present some effective solutions:

  • Amit Desai of Dotcommon Inc. will examine issues relevant to large enterprise applications and introduce thin-client solutions for accessing SQL Server data using a three-tier architecture.
  • Sundar Viswanathan of Microsoft will introduce SQL Server 2000 and outline the features that make this latest version of SQL Server well suited for building large Web applications.
  • Alex Viera of Microsoft will give us a glimpse at the next release of Visual Studio, which includes a new version of Visual FoxPro, and show us how these next generation tools will facilitate building Web applications.

In between the formal presentations, there will be plenty of time for refreshments and networking. We'll have some great door prizes too - we hope to see you there!

About the Sacramento MS DB SIG
The Sacramento Microsoft Database SIG is a new Special Interest Group of the Sacramento PC User Group that focuses on Microsoft's database software and application development tools used to build desktop, network, client/server, and web database applications. The databases that fall under this umbrella include Visual FoxPro, SQL Server, Access, and MSDE. The middle-tier and front-end tools used to access these data sources include Visual FoxPro, Visual Basic, Access, Visual Basic for Applications, Visual InterDev, Active Server Pages, OLE DB (ADO and RDS), and web scripting languages. Our group is comprised primarily of programmers (at levels ranging from beginners to experienced application developers) rather than end-users.
