Computer Assisted Investing

This is the first in a series of articles to discuss computerized investing resources.
Sacramento's American Association of Individual Investors (AAII), Computer Investing Special Interest Group (SIG) meet on the third thursday of the month.

The July 20 meeting had nine investors in a round table discussion chaired by Paul Gulyassy, the SIG Leader. Participants, who usually bought handouts for everybody, took turns presenting information.

The first speaker brought in a 14-page guide to on-line investing, which he had obtained from On-Line Investor.

Another participant reported on buying and selling Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) from Fidelity. This requires a $500,000 account. It was a neutral, not a profitable experience.

One speaker reported on using TC 200, a $295 a year service.

I reported briefly on using Market Guide for screening stocks.

Paul Gulyassy reported in-depth on company sectors and industries. Using BigCharts, he was able to select industries, sub-industries, and sub-sub-industries for charting and some statistics for different periods. He could also compare individual companies with their peers and industries.

The last speaker reported from a Fed-Watch publication.

Sitting around a table with experienced investors and computer users was a learning experience for me. I think everybody enjoyed the open exchange. The handouts and explanations were good, but it would be even better if this group had a computer with a modem and group display capability.

The AAII Computer Investing SIG meets at the SMUD Customer Service Center, 1st floor, Forest View Room #1, 6301 "S" Street, Sacramento (just West of 65th St., North of Highway 50). The next meeting will be August 17. For more information, you can email Paul Gulyassy, SIG Leader, or you can call Paul (530-758-4446) or Jim Rhynes (916-332-8355).
