Thanks to All eXtreme Volunteers!

The 2000 Fall Microsoft eXtreme Event was held on Saturday, November 4, at the Century 14 theaters in Roseville. An eXtreme volunteer effort! The SPCUG volunteers were once again in the spotlight, providing registration and checkout services for the 400+ attendees. It should be noted that, except for one Microsoft representative, all the physical personnel handling the event’s operations at this local location were SPCUG volunteers. And what a terrific job they did!

With the newly-built theater as a backdrop, a nicer layout for getting attendees in and out of the event, and a seasoned volunteer staff, this was one of the best-run eXtreme events in memory. The volunteers worked together like "gears in a clock," moving attendees in record time, and dispensing t-shirts and software after the show just as quickly.

Milt Hull again coordinated the effort, pulling in the consistently available help of Ken Hopkins, Tom Anderson, Diana DeMuth, Carole Harris, Ron Lambert, Milt’s friend Leslie, Gary Sloan, and Stan Morris. Thank you, Milt, and eXtreme volunteers for donating half of your Saturday in representing the SPCUG at this event.

New Volunteers
Roy Korb has volunteered to be our newly-created Chamber of Commerce liaison. Roy will be attending Sacramento Chamber of Commerce meetings and events, representing the SPCUG and attracting new members to our group. Roy, as you may know, has been active in the SPCUG for many years as one of our Software Librarians. He also attends the Steering Committee meetings, offering insight and SPCUG history.

Volunteer Thanks
I appreciated the efforts of Ken Hopkins at the October General Meeting in providing the "main event" for the evening with a presentation on MP3. Ken created a well-organized digital slide show, expounding on MP3 legality, formats and players. Everyone appeared to be very interested in this controversial Internet phenomenon. I don’t remember seeing anyone heading for the doors early. Setting up a slide show, and gathering and verifying information sources can be a time-consuming process. Thanks, Ken.

Volunteer Openings

Please take a look at the following volunteer openings. If you think you can help, contact the "contact person" for that position, or give me a call at 916-921-6414 (by email: stan@gohawk.com).

  1. We need several volunteers who will visit as many computer stores as possible on a monthly basis, and ask them to have our membership information available to their customers. If we could get into the big stores like Frys, CompUSA, and Computer Warehouse, we would probably get a lot of coverage. Other big computer sellers include office stores like OfficeMax, Staples, and Office Depot. Also, include electronic stores like Good Guys, Circuit City, Best Buy, and even Radio Shack. Add the other computer-specific stores like Gateway and all the mom-and-pop computer stores. Contact: Ken Hopkins at ken.hopkins@sacpcug.org.
  2. An additional volunteer(s) will be needed to do research on area computer stores for an "area guide to computer stores" booklet. We would want to know the name of the store, all of their locations in the area (and phone numbers), the product lines they carry, and any additional stuff we think of. We would like to include a consultant section in the guide as well. This would be updated and published periodically as a PDF. This would be a handy resource for everyone. We could sell ad space in this publication, but not require it for entry. We would create a form for the volunteer or the store to fill out. Contact: Ken Hopkins at ken.hopkins@sacpcug.org.
  3. We would also like a volunteer to help with the History of the SPCUG project. We need someone who can scan in images of every Sacra Blue cover that we can find (Frank Leonard has all but maybe 4) and the photos of the speakers from that meeting (when available). This will probably not be published until our next birthday (July). This will be yet another PDF publication. The volunteer needs only to scan the images and name the files accordingly. They would send Ken Hopkins the files. Contact: Ken Hopkins at ken.hopkins@sacpcug.org.
  4. More Newsletter Writers are needed for Sacra Blue and eBlue. You would be writing tips for a tips column (these may also be used as filler). You would also write news articles about current events; evaluate hardware and/or software and write product reviews; or write stories on how you solved some computer problem. Contact: Ken Hopkins at ken.hopkins@sacpcug.org.
  5. A calendar editor is needed for the SPCUG publications. You will edit the 2 1/2 month calendar found in the back of Sacra Blue (a Word document), and edit the Chapter and SIG meeting list. Great volunteer entry position for someone wanting to "get their feet wet". Contact: ken.hopkins@sacpcug.org.

I am sure you will find volunteer work for the group very rewarding, and it could even create some interesting opportunities for you. You may be surprised how little time is involved in some of the positions that hold great benefit for the group.
