SPCUG Holiday Party

This year's SPCUG Holiday Party will be celebrated at the home of Ken Hopkins. The party is open to everyone who volunteers for the group. The party will be held on Sunday, December 17, 1998, between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. This is a potluck party, and everyone brings their favorite party food. Ken will provide ice and an assortment of soft drinks, and is opening up his home to our volunteers for this special afternoon. Ken hosted the party last year as well, but I hear the party has been going on annually for years at other officer's homes. My thanks to Ken, and all the SPCUG volunteers for another year of service to our group.

New Volunteers
Beth Camero has volunteered to be our newest person on the Membership Building Committee. Beth will visit as many computer stores as possible on a monthly basis, and ask them to have our membership information available to their customers. If we could get into the big stores like Frys, CompUSA, and Computer Warehouse, we would probably get a lot of coverage. Other big computer sellers include office stores like OfficeMax, Staples, and Office Depot. If you would like to join Beth in this activity, contact Ken Hopkins.

Beth also volunteered to help with the "History of the SPCUG" project. We needed someone who could scan in images of every Sacra Blue cover that we can find and the photos of the speakers from that meeting (when available). Beth came forth, right after my "volunteer job needs" message hit the listserv. Thanks much, Beth.

Volunteer Thanks
You need to be quiet near the front of the main room before the General Meeting starts each month. There you will find volunteer Dennis Duffy teaching a class of 20-30 SPCUG members and non-members. Dennis has been faithfully running the tutorial for several years as one of the SPCUG's Educational Outreach projects. This project has been very successful, and I believe a lot of that credit goes to Dennis for his professional and patient manner in instruction. The service work amounts to many 11/2 hour sessions of teaching basic Windows OS and Internet over several years. Thanks so much, Dennis!

Volunteer Openings

Please take a look at the following volunteer openings. If you think you can help, contact the "contact person" for that position, or give me a call at 916-921-6414 (by email: stan@gohawk.com).

  1. We need several volunteers who will visit as many computer stores as possible on a monthly basis, and ask them to have our membership information available to their customers. If we could get into the big stores like Frys, CompUSA, and Computer Warehouse, we would probably get a lot of coverage. Other big computer sellers include office stores like OfficeMax, Staples, and Office Depot. Also, include electronic stores like Good Guys, Circuit City, Best Buys, and even Radio Shack. Then the other computer-specific stores like the Gateway stores and all the mom and pop computer stores. Contact: Ken Hopkins.
  2. An additional volunteer(s) will be needed to do the research on area computer stores for an "area guide to computer stores" booklet. We would want to know the name of the store, all of their locations in the area (and phone numbers), the product lines they carry, and any additional stuff we think of, including a consultant section in the guide as well. This would be updated and published periodically as a PDF. This would be a handy resource for everyone. We could sell ad space in this publication, but not require it for entry. We would create a form for the volunteer or the store to fill out. Contact: Ken Hopkins.
  3. More newsletter writers are needed for Sacra Blue and eBlue. You would be writing tips for a tips column (may also be used as filler). Also would write news articles about current events; evaluate hardware and/or software and write product reviews, and write stories on how to you solved some computer problem. Contact: Ken Hopkins.
  4. A Calendar Editor is needed for the SPCUG publications. You will edit the 2 1/2 month calendar found in the back of Sacra Blue (a Word document), and edit the Chapter and SIG meeting list. Great volunteer entry position for someone wanting to "get their feet wet." Contact: Ken Hopkins.

I am sure you will find volunteer work for the group very rewarding, and it could even create some interesting opportunities for you. You may be surprised how little time is involved in some of the positions that hold great benefit for the group.
