Computer Assisted Investing

This is the second in a series of articles to discuss computerized investing resources.
On January 9, 2001, the second Tuesday of January, I attended a meeting of the Second Tuesday Investment Group led by Bob Campbell.

The agenda included a review of Bob's portfolio, a review of Bob Woodward's book about Alan Greenspan, Maestro, and a question-and-answer session on investment issues, research, and opportunities.

I arrived late, so I did not hear the stock review, but here is the list of stocks in Bob's portfolio:

Applied Materials(AMAT) Berkshire Hathaway(BRK.B) Dell Computer (DELL) Disney(DIS) Intel(INTC) JDS Uniphase(JDSU) MCI World Com(WCOM) Morgan Stanley Dean Witter(MWD) NASDAQ 100(QQQ) Schwab(SCH) Sun Microsystems(SUNW)

Bob says losses are unusual for him, but this portfolio lost 38% in the year 2000.

For current information on Bob's portfolio, visit his Web site.

In general, Bob liked Woodward's book about Alan Greenspan. It not only provides lots of information about Alan Greenspan, he said, but it also gives considerable insight into the workings of the Federal Reserve System.

Campbell, the SecondTuesday group leader, is an investors' investor.

One year in a Sacramento Bee contest, his stocks returned over 80%. He has a strong defense and a strong offense. He knows how to save money and how to invest it.

Bob, a Director of the Sacramento NAIC - National Association of Investors Corporation, is a long-term stock investor who augments his stock returns with some very timely use of options.

Bob Campbell at SecondTuesday Investment Meeting

Bob does most of his investment research on the Internet. He has significant computer expertise. Thanks to his use of the System Configuration Utility (Msconfig.Exe), when he keys in Control-Alt-Delete on his Windows 98 PC, only three tasks show up in his Task List.

He combines investment and computer expertise with an ability to help in a very unassuming manner. He leads open and enjoyable meetings. I think I have learned more from Bob than any other investor.

Bob has investment meetings that are open to the public at no charge. These Second Tuesday group meetings are a valuable resource for investors, especially those who do their research on the Internet.

The next meetings will be on February 13 and March 13 at 7:00 p.m. at the Jack in the Box Restaurant at 3040 Sunrise Boulevard, about 1 mile south of Highway 50. The meetings start at 7:00 p.m. For more information, visit Bob's website, click on "Events," then click on "secondtuesday archive."

Bob can also be reached by e-mail or phone (916-721-9905).

My next article will be on investment portals.
