Highlights From the January Steering Committee Meeting

  • The Steering Committee met Jan. 10, with a quorum of officers.
  • Treasurer Don Frieze reported net monthly income of $619, but only because he voided several long-outstanding checks. The group would have sustained a $20 loss without that action.
  • Current membership is 653, according to Membership Director Diana DeMuth.
  • The committee discussed ways of increasing membership, including giveaways, advertising, jamborees, and other thoughts. No decision was reached.
  • President Milt Hull reported that NX, the company being used for the sacpcug.org e-mail system, seems to be out of business, although the Web site still seems to be up. [The site is no longer up. –Ed.] Milt will be meeting with Calweb’s Robert DuGaue to seek another solution. [See the President’s Thoughts column, elsewhere in this issue. –Ed.]
  • Roy Korb, volunteer delegate to the Sacramento Chamber of Commerce, reported a problem that has come up. When SPCUG originally joined the Chamber, we were told members in business could leave business cards or brochures on display at the CofC offices. However, when some members took advantage of this opportunity, our contact quickly told Roy that flyers from several hundred members would be unworkable. Roy assured him that only a few members were likely to take advantage of that opportunity, and the problem is currently tabled.
  • Ken Hopkins asked approval of a project to create Sacra Blue CDs containing a year’s worth of issues and send them to members. The motion was approved.
  • The Committee also voted to send announcements of meetings by e-mail to members who have e-mail addresses on file, beginning with the March mailing.
  • Ken also reported he had separated out the boilerplate text from Sacra Blue and put it into a PDF file as a Member’s Guide. It reduces the number of pages and download size of Sacra Blue, and limits content to almost all new information.
  • Content Editor Tom Anderson and Ken made a plea for more writers to do regular articles.
  • Membership Director Diana DeMuth reported that new members signed up at general meetings were often citing, as their reason for attending, the press releases sent out by Public Relations Coordinator Diana DeMuth.
  • In reviewing the previous general meeting, SC members commented that the BASIC Stamp demonstration was well-planned and well-received. There was little feedback about the eGems presentation.
