Highlights From the February Steering Committee Meeting

With elections coming up, Ken Hopkins was named Elections Officer. Current officers Milt Hull, Tom Anderson, Don Frieze, and Brian Smither were nominated for re-election to their current positions.

Treasurer Don Frieze reported a relatively large influx of renewals and advertising receipts, resulting in a net income of $2,000 for the month, well ahead of budgeted figures. The group’s current bank balance is $34,000.

Volunteer Coordinator Stan Morris proposed an annual Volunteer of the Year award to acknowledge and encourage volunteer effort. Stan suggested the first award go to Frank Leonard, former president, sysop, and jack of all trades.

The committee easily approved the award to Frank, but asked for more details on how annual recipients would be selected.

Sacra Blue editor Tom Anderson reported delays in transcribing the general meeting, and said he wanted to find an alternative method to avoid burning out volunteers with a tediously repetitive task. It was agreed to seek information on using a professional transcription service.

Doug Hohn requested permission to start up an Online SIG to provide assistance to members in getting online. The existing group of online volunteers, intended to help members on an individual basis, will be rolled into the SIG.

Membership is 611, reported Membership Director Diana DeMuth. She asked for, and received, approval to send tickler messages to remind members whose membership has expired to renew. The SC also voted to consider a renewal system that would grant discounts for multiple-year renewals.

President Milt Hull discussed his voice-mail system and said he would work on injecting SPCUG’s phone number into it, allowing for multiple mailboxes and remote retrieval of messages.

Sacra Blue editors Tom Anderson and Ken Hopkins announced they are putting some of their columns on hiatus, specifically Tom’s "Adventures in Computing" and Ken’s "Ken’s Kompendium," due to having found real lives.

Webmaster Brian Smither has added an online form to the Web site that allows members to send new or updated e-mail addresses directly to the Membership Director.
