Stereo Photographs and Inkjet Inks

Fourteen people attended the April 3rd Digital Imaging Group meeting at the Nerdbooks.com store in Roseville.

One member explained how he had taken stereo photographs with his digital camera. He placed his camera on a device with lateral movement and both the device and the camera were mounted on a tripod. After taking one digital photograph of a subject, the camera would be moved to either the right or left and another digital photograph would be taken of the same subject. The two images were printed with an inkjet printer, cut out and pasted on a cardboard mount, and placed in an old-time stereo viewer. A three-dimensional photograph is created, just like the old-time photographs that were originally used with the viewer.

There was a discussion about ICC ink profiles and their uses with inkjet printers. These profiles are created so the inkjet printers can duplicate the colors that are seen on a color monitor. After the customer approves the colors that he see on the monitor, an inkjet print is made. That print becomes the master that all other prints must match.

March Meeting Discusses Inkjets
The March meeting began with a discussion about inkjet printers and the cost of supplies. It was suggested that with the low-end inkjet printers, it was almost as effective to buy a new printer, when they were on sale, as to purchase ink refills. This lead to a discussion of third-party ink refills.

Most agreed that using the right paper with the right ink was necessary to create lasting inkjet images and using third party ink refills may not meet that criteria. The fading problem that Epson had with its ink and paper combinations seem to be greatly improved. The Continuous Flow Ink system was also discussed. They are used with many large commercial inkjet printers.

Hewlett-Packard and Epson printers were the two most popular printers used by members at the meeting.
