Voice Mail – Coming Soon
| |
As I mentioned last month, I purchased a voice mail system for my own business. I received it and had implemented it with a custom call routing menu system and several mailboxes. Since one of the reasons I purchased it was also to accept phone calls from potential new members of the Sacramento PC Users Group, I implemented a line dedicated specifically for the SPCUG line. Although I do not have this line yet, I installed a simulated line to check out the system and see how it would work. It worked great.
Here is what it says:
- The Sacramento PC Users Group meets the third Wednesday of each month at the Association of Realtors at 2003 Howe Avenue across the street from K-Mart between Cottage and Alta Arden. Meeting times are from 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and generally have two speakers to show off products and talk about the group. Meetings are open to the public and everyone is welcome. If you would like more information, you can visit our Web site at www.sacpcug.org.
- If you are interested in membership, please press the number 1 now.
- If you would like to hear about who we have scheduled for our upcoming meetings, please press the number 2 now.
- If you have a general question about your PC and would like one of the answer guys to answer it, please press the number 3 for general questions and the number 4 for more technical questions.
- If you are a vendor and would like to schedule a company demonstration, please press the number 5 now.
- If you would like to volunteer for something in the group, please press the number 6 now.
- Or if you just have a general question about the group, please press the number 7 now. Thank you for calling.
And here are the mailboxes:
- Membership - Membership is currently $30.00 per year to help support the costs of membership within the group. You can send in a membership form along with $30 to the Sacramento PC Users Group, P. O. Box 162227, Sacramento, CA 95816. Membership forms are on our website at www.sacpcug.org. If you would like to have someone mail you a membership form, leave a message at the tone and our Membership Director will send you one as soon as possible. Keep in mind that everyone is a volunteer and it might take longer depending on how often they check the system. Thank you for calling.
- Upcoming Speakers - In the next few months we have ………………
- General Answer Guy - Your question is being routed to someone who can answer your general question about PCs. Keep in mind that everyone is a volunteer and it might take longer depending on how often they check the system. Thank you for calling.
- Technical Answer Guy - Since your question is of a technical nature, your question is being routed to the technical team of the Sacramento PC Users Group. Keep in mind that everyone is a volunteer and it might take longer depending on how often they check the system. Thank you for calling.
- Program Coordinator - If you represent a company and would like to talk to our Program Coordinator, please a message at the tone with your name, company, and e-mail address or phone number. Or you can e-mail ProgramCoordinator@sacpcug.org. Someone will get back to you as soon as possible.
- Volunteer/General SPCUG - If you would like to become a volunteer or just get more involved with the Sacramento PC Users Group, you are welcome to come to our Steering Committee meetings on the second Wednesday of each month located at the Sizzler’s on Fulton Avenue starting at 6:30 p.m. and ending around 8:00 p.m. Or you can leave a message at the tone and someone will get back to you as soon as possible.
- General SPCUG - Please leave a general question after the tone and someone will get back to you as soon as they can. Thank you for calling.
Now that I have this system all set up, I will ask for approval and get another line installed to answer the SPCUG line and implement the system. However, I do plan on moving soon so I will wait until after that date.
Getting the line simulator was the fun part. Teltone has one of the best ones in the industry, but they were extremely expensive—over $1,000 for a four-line simulator with caller ID and programmable line numbers. I chose not to purchase one that expensive. Ken told me about a company here in the Sacramento area called Digital Products Company, so I looked them up. Sure enough, they are located here in Folsom. I checked out their website and found a couple different products. One was just a test line and one comes with six lines. They also had kits. So I purchased a kit for the six-line product, which saved me over $200.
When all the pieces came, I set up to solder the pieces together and have my line simulator. It took me about two days to solder everything together and when I got ready to test it, it did not work. It turn out the flux caused a problem and shorted out a chip, so I had to call the company to have them test it for me. Sure enough, they replaced the bad chip that I had blown and cleaned up all the residue flux I had not cleaned and it worked well. I was just a little disappointed that I did not figure out for myself that I had made a mistake by not cleaning out the flux in the first place. But it works now and that is the important part.
Now all I have to do is move.
