Treasurer Don Frieze reported a profit for the previous month of $876, partly because the insurance company that covers our equipment and meeting locations allows payment of the premium over a five-month period.
Don also noted that 41 of the 50 shareware CDs ordered from APCUG have been sold and five given to new members. The remaining four were given to Membership Director Diana DeMuth to use as a premium for new members.
Ken Hopkins has been trying to arrange for an SPCUG t-shirt, and has found a company that will print material in six colors on a white t-shirt for $2.95 in lots of 504. A lively discussion ensued on what use the group would make of the shirts: give to members, sell to members, give to volunteers, etc. The committee decided the idea needs further study and discussion.
Vice President Tom Anderson reported, on behalf of the absent Membership Director, Diana DeMuth, that membership is now at 584 dues-paying members, with 6 new memberships and 30 renewals garnered in the past month.
Sacra Blue Content Editor Tom Anderson reported that Sacra Blue was running very late this month. This is the first time since he and Ken Hopkins assumed responsibility for publication that "putting an issue to bed" has been delayed until after the steering committee meeting.
Anderson said the delay was caused by a fiasco with the temp agency with which we contracted to transcribe the meeting text. The agency did not send someone qualified to handle the task they were given, and it fell to one of our usual volunteers, Twila Carver, to transcribe the meeting. Other options are being pursued for next month.
Tom also floated the idea of printing the names of new members each month, along with those who have renewed or expired. There was mixed reaction.
Webmaster Brian Smither noted that the sale of Calweb, where the group's Web site is located, makes us vulnerable should the new owners decide not to grant free Web page space to SPCUG. However, he has the entire contents of the site safely backed up so it can be quickly installed elsewhere if the need arises.
[Note: Brian reports that FTP access to the site was blocked as of May 22, but he contacted Calweb and straightened out the problems so our Web site is now intact again.
Additionally, he reports receiving from Marsha Leonard a final notice about renewing our domain name registration with Network Solutions. That, too, has been taken care of, with the registration going into 2003.]
Volunteer Coordinator Stan Morris reports that positive results from the box recently placed on the membership application asking if new members wished to volunteer. Several persons have contacted him about volunteering.
The Online SIG was cancelled as previously constituted, and it has been replaced by an online service, made up of volunteers who offer to help members with problems getting online. Stan Morris has created a charter for the service.
