GearGrip - CRT
Review by Ken Hopkins
Back in October 2000, I wrote about a great product called GearGrip. In case you did not see it (or need a reminder), I have included a picture of that useful product. GearGrip is a carrier that allows you to carry a tower or mini-tower computer easily.
CaseAce, the manufacturer, has come out with a new product that makes it just as easy to carry a monitor. This one is called GearGrip - CRT.
It features the same black web straps and buckles. The harness wraps securely around the monitor. You tighten the straps so that the monitor will not slip. Like the computer carrier, there is a comfortable handle on the top and D rings to clip on a shoulder strap. The base price does not include that shoulder strap.
The straps will work equally as well with a monitor that has a swivel base as one that does not. Monitors as large as 21 inches will work. Unfortunately, my 21-inch ViewSonic monitor was too large, but it works very well on the 15-inch NEC monitor that I bring out in the field on occasion. I would like to see CaseAce include a chart showing monitors that have been tried on their Web site. It would make it easier to decide if it will work.
The buckles have been arranged so that the soft web strapping is the only thing that makes contact with the monitor. The buckles snap open and closed with ease, and I could not see how they might open accidentally. This seems like a very secure way to transport monitors. It worked very well for my daughter when she recently moved from one apartment to another. (Maybe too well; she has not returned it yet).
Like the computer carrier before it, there is a Velcro loop that you use to secure the cords to the top of the monitor. That way when you get to the new location, all of the cords will be handy. Unlike the computer carrier, you will have to take the GearGrip - CRT off before using the monitor since it partially covers the screen.
CaseAce warns that the straps may damage the doors found on the bottom of some monitors. All of the monitors I own of that type already have broken or lost doors, so I guess this is a good warning.
They also warn that the GearGrip - CRT will work with tube monitors but not with LCD displays. I guess that means we can expect an LCD panel carrier in the future.
I heartily recommend the GearGrip - CRT to anyone who needs to transport monitors (even if it is only once a year). It is so much easier to move a monitor with a handle than it is without. I will be bringing it to some future user group meeting and you will be able to see for yourself.
