SPCUG Web Site Chat Sessions

SPCUG's Webmaster, Brian Smither, is in the process of adding a "Live Chat" feature for online computer-related information requests. This will be a very progressive club service move for the group, and could turn out to be a great asset for our newer members who require immediate attention. Brian developed the idea for this project, brought it to the Steering Committee, and is now implementing and merging the feature into the Web site with the help of InstantService.com.

Cheers!: The Sacramento PC Users Group was responsible for logging $32,000 in item orders at the KVIE Art Auction. Way to go, volunteers! This was not only a nice community volunteer project to do, but also one of several options we have to get the word out about our own valued, non-profit, public service organization.

Volunteers in Action
Our group’s 19th birthday was celebrated this year under the direction of our President Milt Hull, with the very welcomed assistance of Jonathan Bernard and his friend Joyce. Jonathan and Joyce purchased the four cakes, sodas, and other items for serving and beautifully served the entire group, without a single piece of cake being left on the table. Nice planning, all involved!

Evelyn Kaehler, who came to the July Steering Committee meeting with her friend Diana, who is in the process of setting up a new Web SIG, has applied to be the new Book Review Editor. Tom Anderson has discussed this with her and feels she's a good candidate. So Evelyn has been appointed as our new Book Review Editor and her first contribution appears in this issue. Contact Evelyn if you are interested in reviewing a book. I thank her for the help and wish her well.

Volunteer Thanks
Two non-members have donated a total of $75 to the SPCUG as an expression of thanks for Brian Smither’s volunteer work as an SPCUG Answer Guy. This volunteer work involves helping members and the general public with computer-related problems.

I don’t want to forget to thank Dick Froelick and Martin Stevenson for helping out at the May General meeting by acting as vendor table managers for Dave Whittle’s MGI presentation. Volunteers like these are asked on the spot to help out when a need suddenly comes up at the meeting. These volunteers are very important to us.

Volunteer Openings
Please take a look at the following volunteer openings. If you think you can help, contact the "contact person" for that position, or e-mail Stan.

  1. The Group Benefits Coordinator position is now available and is in need of someone's help right away. Marsha Leonard was the last GBC and did the job of listing the many benefits available to members that you might not have otherwise been made aware of from month to month. Is anyone interested in filling the Group Benefits Coordinator position? I will provide more information if you are interested in the job. Contact: Stan Morris.

  2. We need several volunteers who will visit as many computer stores as possible on a monthly basis, and ask them to have our membership information available to their customers. If we could get into the big stores like Frys, CompUSA, and Computer Warehouse, we would probably get a lot of coverage. Other big computer sellers include office stores like OfficeMax, Staples, and Office Depot. Also, include electronic stores like Good Guys, Circuit City, Best Buys, and even Radio Shack. Then the other computer-specific stores like the Gateway stores and all the mom-and-pop computer stores. Contact: Ken Hopkins.

  3. An additional volunteer(s) will be needed to do research on area computer stores for an "area guide to computer stores" booklet. We would want to know the name of the store, their locations in the area (and phone numbers), the product lines they carry, and additional useful information. We may include a consultant section in the guide as well. This would be updated and published periodically as a PDF. This would be a handy resource for everyone. We could sell ad space in this publication, but not require it for entry. We would create a form for the volunteer or the store to fill out. Contact: Ken Hopkins.

  4. More newsletter writers are always needed for Sacra Blue and eBlue. There are several options here: You can write a regular or irregular column on a computer subject—lots of subjects are available. You could write tips for a tips column, which may also be used as filler. You could also write news articles about current events, evaluate hardware and/or software and write product reviews, or write stories about how you solved some computer problem. Contact: Tom Anderson or Ken Hopkins.

I am sure you will find this volunteer work very rewarding and it could even create some interesting opportunities for you. You may be surprised how little time is involved in some of these positions.
