More Web Sites Worth a Look

Beginner's Guide to Downloading: C|Net's Guides - A step-by-step guide to downloading files and installing the programs after the download.

Free MP3 Ripping: SysDesk - Microsoft will charge $30 for the ability to rip MP3s in Windows XP. This free utility will handle the task in Windows 9x.

Batteries and More: Thomas Distributing - Mark Naber turned me on to this excellent source for rechargeable batteries, rechargers, and other supplies. The prices are fair, the selection is good, and the company ships quickly.

Anonymous Juice: Anonymous Juice - A genuinely individual Web site, this includes "the review of everything I've encountered," oddities, the online version of a print zine, and one million tiny plays (okay, maybe that's the ambition).

Surviving Everything: Worst Case Scenarios - This is the online version of that Worst Case Scenario Handbook, which gives illustrated instructions on handling every possible kind of emergency, from sharks to quicksand.

The Sklyarov Arrest: New York Times Opinion - This is one of the most informative treatments of the subject covered in the article this month by Mathew Skala (You must sign up for a free membership in the New York Times online to read it).

Intellectual Property: ArsTechnica - This is another take on the idea of intellectual property - copyright, patents, etc. Jon Stokes suggests approaching it from a structural, rather than rights, point of view.

Passport Security: Avirubin - Microsoft's Passport technology, which aims to be a single sign-on system, contains serious risks, according to two researchers from AT&T Labs.

The Majesty of Russia
The Library of Congress has put together an exhibit of photographs taken of Russia by a photographer named Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii, who used black-and-white photos projected through a filtered light system to make color images shortly after the turn of the century.

Dubya's Diary: Mad Kane - Okay, so it's a site for liberals. But it's very funny if you're not a fan of the first appointed president.

Attack of the Music Companies: C|Net News - In their quest to prevent illegal copying of music files, the recording companies are now pressuring Internet service providers to cancel the accounts of people caught using software like Napster.

Famous People's Real Names: Famous Name Changes - You know Muhammad Ali was Cassius Clay, but whose real name is Demetria Guynes? And whose real name is Bob Ritchie? Get the scoop on famous people's original names here. P.S. Demetria is Demi Moore and Bob is Kid Rock.

Flush Here: Toilet Museum - There may be no words to describe this one: photos of toilets. And, believe it or not, it's part of the Toilet Web Ring.

Turbocharge Your Cable Modem: Home Net Help - How to use two IP addresses to dramatically increase the speed of your cable modem.

History of Photography: The Museum of the History of Science in Oxford put together this exhibit about the early days of photography and the ingenious people who moved the art forward.

News for Techies: Corante - This is a heavy-duty news site for people who follow the technology industry in depth. If you need to know what's going on at all levels, this is a good site to bookmark.

Tom Anderson spends entirely too much time surfing the Web and has only this column to show for it. Send him your suggestions for Web sites to visit.
