More Web Sites Worth a Look

Word Help for Professional Editors: Editorium - This is not your usual "Ctrl+B will make characters bold" stuff. This is serious Word information for people who use Word on a regular basis to edit serious material. It's very helpful if you do this kind of work.

A Sense of Humor: Modern Humorist - You may be familiar with the Onion; the Modern Humorist is another funny site that focuses on current events and pop culture.

The NPR 100: NPR.org - "Rhapsody in Blue," "Showboat," and Stravinsky's "Symphony of Psalms" certainly belong on the list of best American musical works of the 20th century. But "Alexander's Ragtime Band"? "Back in the Saddle Again"? Check your choices against National Public Radio's list.

Those Drapes! How Could They?: Just In Space - This is a very funny site, with truly hideous interiors from various porn films (the actors are blacked out), along with critical comments. Lots of other interesting and funny material, too.

More Humorous News: Satire Wire - "Bin Laden Rookie Card Drops in Value"; "Justice to Break Up Apple for Turning Microsoft into Monopoly"; O.J. to Train Ground Troops". SatireWire has a wickedly funny take on the news.

Technocopia: Satire Wire - "Your Guide to the Technological Lifestyle" is a sort of Consumer Reports of technology—lots of helpful guidance.

Find Free E-mail: FEPG.net - The Free Email Providers Guide is one of the best places to locate a free provider. The best providers get a "Select Site" award.

Ghost Sites: Disobey.com - The Museum of E-Failure preserves the home pages of dot-com companies that have fallen by the wayside in the Internet collapse of 2001.

Beginnings: LOC.gov - The Library of Congress' first exhibition devoted to its international collection focuses on creation myths from around the world, including a Taoist myth represented by this ancient, rare painting.

The Hidden Forest: Photos and discussion of fungi, mosses, lichen, and other unusual underfoot plants assembled by Clive Shirley, a resident of Auckland, New Zealand.

Whadja Find?: Found Magazine - This unusual magazine collects found materials—notes, ticket stubs, doodles—anything that gives an insight into people's lives.

Technology and Film: TheTech.org - You'll need to have Real Player and the Flash plug-in installed, but then you can explore the Tech, the museum of innovation in San Jose. Much of the exhibit is connected to 2001: A Space Odyssey, including a collection of advances depicted in the film that have come to pass.

Neil Gaiman: The Web site of Neil Gaiman, author of the new bestseller American Gods, along with Neverwhen, Stardust, and the legendary Sandman.

Hard-Working Art: LaborArts.org - Art works that celebrate the labor of American men and women and their unions.

How Safe Is Passport?: Marc Slemko is a Seattle developer who showed that he could retrieve credit card numbers and other personal information from users of Microsoft's Passport service just by sending a single e-mail. Here's his discussion of the Passport technology.

Is It That Bad?: Infoworld - InfoWorld columnist Brian Livingston has also investigated Passport; here's his analysis and discussion with various industry experts.

More Passport Risks: Avi Rubin - Researchers at AT&T Labs have also examined the theories behind Passport and other "single signon protocols." Their report is thorough and enlightening.

Tom Anderson spends entirely too much time surfing the Web and has only this column to show for it. Send him your suggestions for Web sites to visit.
