President's Thoughts

E-Mail
When we had our Bulletin Board System and the Internet was first open to the public, our user group wanted a way to send and receive messages, so we got a gateway out to the Internet and we were off.

As our bulletin board system declined in usage, CalWeb came through and sponsored a way for us to have a list server to subscribe to and be able to create threads of messages, so we could conduct business using the Web. It is the list server on CalWeb's site. We have one for the officers as well.

A couple of months ago, the officers list was changed, because of an administration problem, to a new list server based on the SacPCUG.org e-mail program. This e-mail system is also sponsored by CalWeb. It has the capability of having more users than the other server and it has list administration.

This month we are promoting our list server for the members. The list address is members@sacpcug.org and any member of the Sacramento PC Users Group can subscribe to it for free. All you do is send an e-mail to members-owner@sacpcug.org with "Subscribe" in the subject line and you will be added to the list. If you want to subscribe but are sending the request from a different e-mail address (not the one where you want the e-mails sent), then put "subscribe e-mail@company.com" in the subject line instead. Substitute your desired e-mail address where it says e-mail@com pany.com.

Speaking of this e-mail system, many people have forgotten how to log on to the e-mail system. All members get a free e-mail address with their membership. If you do not have one and you're a member, send an e-mail to postmaster@sacpcug.org and ask for one. The postmaster will verify your membership and set you up with an e-mail account.

Here are the instructions: Go to http://mail.inforum.net:81/. Log in using your first initial and full last name together with @sacpcug.org at the end of it. Example: Mr. Firstname Lastname would use flastname@sacpcug.org with your password and you're in. Initially, your password is the same as your login: first initial and last name. After that I suggest you change your password right away to one that you can remember.

Then set up either a pop mail system so you can pop your mail off using your usual e-mail program, or set up an automatic forward so it will forward all your mail to your regular e-mail. You can also just use the Web-based mail program that you are using when you follow these instructions. You can send and retrieve your mail right from the web.

You don't have to use this e-mail system as a member; you can subscribe to the members list server with your regular e-mail address and not miss any features that you might think you will get by having a SacPCUG.org address. It is just there as an added service to our members.
