Sacramento County has opened a recycling station for old computers, televisions, and other "e-waste."
Such items, by state law, may no longer be put into landfills because of toxic concerns. David Pelser, Director of the County's Department of Waste Management and Recycling, was quoted by the Sacramento Bee as saying, "It seems that many residents have old computers and TVs sitting around, and don't know how to dispose of them."
The county's new North Area Recovery Station was designed to hold scrap metal items, yard waste, tires, appliances and more, in addition to e-waste.
Up to two electronic units from each resident will be accepted at the standard fee for weighed and non-weighed loads. There is a $20 per unit additional charge for each item over two units. In addition to TVs and computers, e-waste also includes printers, copiers, and fax machines.
The station also has a recovery area for household hazardous wastes like paint, pool chemicals, and used motor oil.
Where possible, computers and components will be salvaged, repaired and resold. Where not possible, the parts will be shredded or crushed, then sold to manufacturers for re-processing.
The station is located at 4450 Roseville Road, in the north area of Sacramento County.
