President's Thoughts

Dealing with the heat and incredible processor speeds.
Cooling Units
As the summer is here and temperatures are getting hot, computers are not up to speed as they should be. It is a proven fact that the cooler the processor is, the faster it runs. If you live in Sacramento, you know that it gets hot here. I water ski as much as I can to cool off! Or I head up to the mountains and go canoeing in the cool lakes. Your poor processor doesn't have that luxury. It has to bake in the summer heat and run slower. Now, if you happen to have an air-conditioned room to cool down the area that your computer is in, then the temperature of the processor is cooler than normal. However, it is still hot and sometimes runs, on average, at 130o.

You can purchase a processor cooler fan that has an exceptionally large heat sink on it with an oversize fan to help cool it down. Or you can purchase one of those liquid cool fans that everyone is hot about. They are pretty cool. However, it might be overkill with the water tank and all of that. Usually, in a 70o room, a processor can be cooled down to around 100o with one of these coolers. They are not really worth the hassle. Besides the price, they could be messy if you don’t have the room inside your case. Also, they heat up the water as well.

You can always purchase a liquid nitrogen unit, made for the power user. Talk about money! It is no joke; you can purchase one of these units. However, I’m only trying to let you know that processors work much better in cooler weather, and it is a good idea to keep the room cool where your computer is. Don’t tell your better half that I said to get one of these.

Motherboards
Have you noticed lately that system boards are coming way down in price? You can purchase a new system board for around $85 that has five or six PCI slots, an AGP slot, and support for RAID IDE and USB-2 right on the board. It is incredible what you can upgrade to right now. I was watching Tech TV the other day, a channel available only on satellite in this area right now. They were showing some newly-released system boards and their features. I was amazed at the technology coming out for such little price tags. My suggestion for you who like to build your own systems is to upgrade now. With overclocking and cooling, speeds can be as fast as 2.4GHz and you can have these speeds cheaply nowadays.
