Orangevale/Folsom Meeting Notes

Since our secretary has been so busy with understandable summer projects, I will attempt a very brief description of the meeting. The meeting began with our usual opening followed by our usual questions and answers session.

One question had to do with a jpg picture not opening— was it a bad picture file or a computer fault? The suggestion was to go to Explorer and search for another jpg file that's already on the computer and try to open that newly-found test jpg file by double clicking on it.

If it— the newly found test jpg file— opens, the picture file in question is most likely bad. If the newly-found file does not open, try opening your picture-editing program and attempt to manually open the newly-found test picture. If the test picture still does not open, the picture-editing program may be at fault. If the test picture opens using the editing program, then you need to check the file associations in Explorer to verify that jpg extensions are directed to your picture-editing program.

To make it quicker, I will just say: Try Windows Help and enter associations for a subject. If you happened to have attended the meeting, there was a more detailed discussion, but that's all the time I have now.

The main topic of the meeting was "How to build an Ethernet Local Area Network." An eight-page handout, written by Dennis Richardson, was distributed with the meeting's main topic, which was intended to answer all questions and be a valuable instructional step-by-step resource to take home. The handout was well-received and even more appreciated after the demonstration.

The meeting attendees used the handout to guide the instructor through the entire network building process so everyone could see how the handout really works in its detailed picture-by-picture driven story process. The instructor was there to just follow the audience's directions as they followed the handout procedure.

The meeting ended about five minutes late, and most seemed to be very impressed with their take-home handout.

The Orangevale/Folsom Chapter of the SPCUG meets on the 4th Thursday of each month except in November and December, when the two meetings are normally combined and moved to the first Thursday of December due to the holiday season. Our meetings are open to anyone; please come to learn and share but most of all come to have a good time.

7:00 PM to 9:00 PM, Fair Oaks Presbyterian Church, AMC Room 1, 11427 Fair Oaks Blvd., Fair Oaks, CA 95628
