President Milt Hull opened the meeting by advising the audience that the current issue of Sacra Blue is the biggest we've ever published. In the past the newsletter has won several awards, and this issue will be a contender at this year's COMDEX show.
He also stated that the SPCUG used to be the fifth largest user group in the nation and the largest west of the Rockies, and could still be ranked at the top even with our current membership numbers, considering every user group has had serious drops in enrollment. Regardless of our numbers or ranking, the SPCUG is still very much committed to bringing you the best presentations and services possible.
Mike Zellmer, SPCUG's Membership Director, reminded the membership that having current e-mail addresses on file will make communicating simpler and will streamline the process of delivering passwords for access to the Web site. If anyone has any questions about becoming a member, Mike will be most happy to go over the details.
Tom Anderson and Ken Hopkins proudly boasted on the size of the July/August combined issue. The issue is 136 pages, about 13 MB to download, and is quite possibly the largest publication of any user group in the nation. The prior record for page count was 96 (or was it 104?). The bulk of this issue is the special 20-year history series of articles. The regular columns and feature articles are top-notch for this issue as well (are they ever otherwise?).
Stan Morris, SPCUG's Volunteer Coordinator, asked the audience if anyone is interested in becoming the next Editor of Sacra Blue. We need to get replacements for Tom and Ken, who have given their 4-month notice, on-board, trained, and provisioned soon.
Milt and Ken ran down the list of future speakers: Tonight: digital photography and eBay; September: WinWay Corporation with Résumé Deluxe; October: Milt's demonstration of wireless home networking; November: Kevin Mitnik, the famous cracker, has been invited. Numerous other individuals and companies have been invited. And, as always, ideas on presenters or presentation topics are requested. Just let Ken or Milt know.
