The last two meetings of the Orangevale-Folsom chapter featured exciting presentations by two vendors of computer hardware and equipment.
At our February meeting, Dave and Nathan Davis of KD&C Computers in Citrus Heights demonstrated a home entertainment system based on the latest and greatest high speed computer and television technologies. The computer components include a server and two smaller remote computers to set up the home network. The main computer starts with an FT 440BX Promise motherboard with Raid mirroring/striping technology which affords up to a 20 MB/sec transfer rate. Included with the system is an Orb removable drive with 2.2 GB capacity and 12 MB per second transfer rate. Video is handled by an ATI All in Wonder 128 which has a built in mpeg decoder. A DVD Ram disk which should appear on the market soon will have 5+ gigabyte capacity in a rewriteable drive format and will be much more reliable than the cd r/w. Sound is currently delivered via an Altec Lansing 305 system but will be upgraded to the 350 Pro Logic USB speaker set which is digital all the way thus eliminating the need for a sound card. This system will present surround sound home theater when the DVD pumps movies to the connected television. In this presentation, Dave and Nathan provided a view of the future marriage of television and computer technologies and it looks very exciting indeed.

At our March meeting, Lewis Contreras from Cyberguys, Inc. was on hand to show off and discuss their inventory of unusual and interesting computer equipment and accessories. The Rancho Cordova company has recently closed their retail outlet and gone strictly mail order. Long known as a source for all those hard-to-get items, Lewis explained that the company has experienced explosive growth since their last visit with us two years ago and has decided to concentrate on their Internet and mail order marketing. With the growth, Cyberguys has expanded their inventory to include major hardware items such as memory, motherboards, and CPUs.
Before he finished, Lewis held a drawing for an assortment of prizes including one $25 gift certificate to Cyberguys. Nearly everybody came away with something, and all were impressed and grateful for Lewis's interesting presentation.
The Orangevale chapter meets on the fourth Thursday of the month at the Church of Religious Science in Orangevale, 6035 Main Avenue, between Greenback Lane and Madison Avenue, from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. Please join us.
