At promptly 7:00 p.m. on May 18, chapter secretary Ken Weger, in the absence of chapter president Dick Towle, started the meeting with the usual welcome and rundown on the advantages of belonging to the SPCUG and the Auburn chapter.
Ken introduced member Greg Dokamas who went on to explain how GPS works. He used Jarmin 3+, a GPS software product that cost roughly $350 a year ago. He also compared two road maps, DeLorme's Street Atlas 6.0 and shareware program Waypoint Plus. Greg actually preferred Waypoint as being able to do more accurate routing using the GPS system, although Street Atlas did have more maps available.

Greg showed many things that the GPS system could do, such as plot your travel from and to your destination. It also let you backtrack where you have been to where you started. He was also able to store all these points within the GPS Receiver. It runs on AA batteries or via a patch cord to the cigarette lighter of your auto or airplane. Greg also explained how the military causes the accuracy to jitter a bit so that enemies could not use pinpoint accuracy for sending their own bombs using our satellites.
Our next meeting is June 15. Don't forget to get our chapter's latest information and updates on our Web site.
