President Gary Sloan opened our May meeting at Placer Savings Bank in Roseville by welcoming Jack and Margie Younger from the Roseville Press-Tribune, our local newspaper. Jack writes the "Club Chatter" column in the paper. Margie took photographs of the meeting. Jack is preparing an article about the Roseville chapter's first year of service.
Chapter vice president Guy Manwaring conducted the main presentation on digital cameras. He demonstrated a Sony Mavica FD81 mega-pixel digital camera. This camera stores JPG images with several choices of compression; the JPEG format takes a small amount of space and produces great pictures. Guy brought photo-realistic pictures printed on a Hewlett-Packard 720 inkjet printer using special coated paper and used a laptop to display pictures taken at the meeting.

Two members also brought their digital cameras to the meeting. One was a Kodak DC 220, the other an Olympus. It was interesting to note the difference in size and weight of the three cameras. Also noteworthy were the memory differences. Onboard camera memory went from 1.44 MB with the Sony camera to 16 MB with the Kodak camera. The Kodak and Olympus used flash memory cards vs. floppies in the Mavica.
The meeting concluded after a lively technical discussion on resolution settings and pixel definition and properties. This interesting topic will be discussed at length at future meetings.
