Our Roseville Chapter, SPCUG meeting was held at Computer Renaissance on Thursday, July 1st. We heard an interesting presentation from Clark Abrahamson, Account Executive at XSspeed! about his company's high-speed Internet access service, which greatly increases downloading speeds. XSspeed! is provided by Micron Internet Services and WBS Cable. The service combines dial-up and wireless Internet access technologies and claims to offer data-hungry home and small-business users fast Internet access at extremely competitive rates.
XSspeed! operates on a transmitter's "line of sight" radius and in some cases, buildings or other obstructions may inhibit your ability to access it. Once it has been determined that the signal is available, XSspeed! technicians install a small microwave receiver at your home or business. A cable modem is installed on your PC or Local Area Network (LAN) as well. Your connection to the Internet is made using any one of Micron's dial-up plans, but the data coming to you takes a different path; your requested information from the Internet comes to your PC or LAN using XSspeed!'s high-speed microwave wireless network.

XSspeed will enable download speeds of 256Kbps, 512Kbps and 1.54Mbps. A cable modem is required, and a service installation fee is charged. Currently, XSspeed! is available in limited areas, but the company is planning installation for the greater Sacramento area soon.
