The Internet SIG meeting was held on Oct 5 with Ken Hale at the helm. Right away our equipment started to show its age: our 28.8 modem went belly up. Luckily, member Bill Spoto had his laptop handy. During the question and answer session, a question on setting up an account in Microsoft Outlook brought a good tip from Bill. Whenever Bill is setting up a new client, he has them send an e-mail to themselves from the new setup. That way, they can test both sending and receiving e-mail.

We next went to Microsoft's automatic update site. Everything went successfully, although I caution against downloading and installing too many things at once from the site. It also contains themes, games, and device drivers. As with any upgrade or modification, do one thing at time and test it before moving on to the next.

Next on the agenda was Barbara Gwiazdon, who took us to a site on the Bridgeport covered bridge. We then downloaded Winamp in preparation for the main chapter meeting on Wednesday.

The subject of the main meeting was downloading and playing songs in the new audio format, MP3. After we laplinked Winamp from Bill's laptop to the club's PC, we installed and configured it. We then attempted to play a previously downloaded MP3, but our 486/120MHz PC just wasn't beefy enough and the sound kept cutting out. Back to Bill's laptop.

This time we were successful. You can download MP3s from Usenet newsgroups or any of the thousands of sites on the Web. The best site is at the aptly named mp3.com. Read the FAQ, get the software and get the songs there. You can search for songs at mp3.lycos. Be aware of any copyright and piracy issues.

Our next meetings are the Internet SIG on Nov 2 and the main meeting on Nov 3. We'll have two members of Nevada County Y2K team at the main meeting. They will give a presentation on how to make sure your PC is ready for the next year. Visit our Web site for locations, directions, and more information.
