President Dick Towle opened the meeting with the usual welcome and introduction of guests. He gave a quick report on his recent operation and wanted to show off his new supertoy, an HP Laptop Computer with all the bells and whistles.
We then spent quite a bit of time on Q&A and clearing the air of semantics when explaining away the problems and fixes from the various experts in the group.
The main program of the evening was a demonstration of Go Back, by WildFile, Inc., and a companion program of similar design, Second Chance by PowerQuest. Incidentally, PowerQuest has a whole collection of programs necessary for proper computer management, such as Partition Magic, Drive Image, Drive Copy, Boot Magic and now Second Chance.
As explained in the November issue of Sacra Blue, Go Back did what it was purported to do. However, both programs will revert your hard drive to the way it was; view your hard drive back in time, recover deleted or modified files and restore what has been changed.
The programs run continually in the background, and only the changes require space on your hard drive, so it is quite economical on space. Dick deleted some old files and then restored them using Second Chance.
All changes and events are logged so that you can see what and when something was changed. If anything, Second Chance was even easier to use than Go Back, although both were quite good and very similar. Take your choice and you can't go wrong.
After the presentations, Ken told the group that after defragging his several hard drives, he was unable to receive incoming mail, but could send outgoing mail just fine.
After looking at his setup using Eudora Pro, he found that for some reason, his address of mail@jps.net suddenly became mail/jps.net. How the slash became exchanged with the @ sign can only be attributed to the defragging process. Interesting. A quick correction remedied the problem and all is well with Eudora receiving mail again. Refreshments were served and a drawing was held where every member present received something to take home. A copy of PowerQuest's Partition Magic was a main prize for the lucky winner.
